National Polio Laboratory on Wednesday confirmed presence of poliovirus in sewage of Rawalpindi and Peshawar, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

National Institute of Health NIH) sources said that the poliovirus has been confirmed for the 14th time in the country's sewage this year while wild poliovirus detected in sewage from Rawalpindi and Peshawar.

The NIH sources further said that poliovirus has been found in the sewage of Shaheen Muslim Town, Peshawar while sewage from Rawalpindi’s Sarai Kala Taxila also contained poliovirus.

The sources further disclosed that poliovirus has been found in the sewage of Peshawar for the sixth time this year.

Sources informed that this year, polio has been found for the first time in the sewage of Shaheen Muslim Town and a sample was taken for polio test from Peshawar's sewage on July 17.

Sources said that the last case of polio from Peshawar was reported on 20 July 2020 and a sample was taken for polio test from Sarai Kala Taxila on July 17.

Polio virus has been found for the first time in the sewage of Rawalpindi this year while polio was confirmed in Rawalpindi's sewage in September 2022, sources added.

Sources said that the last case of polio in Rawalpindi was reported in June 2010, sources said adding that Rawalpindi, Peshawar's sewage genetic test is continued.
