Cellphone services were suspended along the routes of mourning processions in Karachi on Monday, while, on the other hand, the Punjab government said that cellphone services will remain partially jammed in some cities of the province on 9th and 10th of Muharram, while there would be no suspension in some major cities of the province, including Lahore, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.

The ban imposed by the Sindh Home Department on taking out rallies and processions during the holy month of Muharram without the administration’s permission is already in place.

Similarly, there is already a ban on pillion riding on 9th and 10th of the month.

Likewise, the display of weapons and the flying of drones have also been prohibited.

The Punjab government said that cellphone services would remain suspended in a majority of districts of the province on 9th and 10th of Muharram from 8:00 in the morning till 10:00 at night only along the routes of processions and the areas where majalis would be held.

In no city, these services would be completely suspended, it said, adding that however, services would remain available in the provincial capital Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Khushab, Sialkot, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Vehari, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Okara and Chiniot.

The provincial government said the decision had been taken to protect the lives of citizens.
