In the heart of Beijing, a captivating event unfolded on Thursday as individuals from diverse backgrounds converged to share their genuine experiences of life in Xinjiang, the Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China. Titled "Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" Sharing Session, the gathering aimed to provide a nuanced understanding of the region's culture, exchanges with the outside world, international communication, and its overall development.

The session showcased a spectrum of perspectives, featuring four key subjects: Xinjiang's rich cultural tapestry, its global interactions, international communication, and its ongoing development efforts.

Nurnisahan Yasen, a Uygur resident of Hotan prefecture, Xinjiang, revealed a personal journey of transformation — from a novice garment worker to the director of Xinjiang Jinghe Textile Technology Co., Ltd. Her story highlighted the opportunities for growth and skill development in the region.

Renowned writer and former Culture Minister of China, Wang Meng, emphasized the role of literary works in portraying Xinjiang's profound cultural heritage and the everyday lives of its people. By intertwining regional stories with cultural richness and natural beauty, literature becomes a powerful medium to bridge understanding.

Historian Ji Lianhai, having visited Xinjiang over 10 times, shared insightful impressions of the region's extensive history, vibrant culture, and harmonious ethnic relations, providing a historical context to contemporary narratives.

Global internet influencers added their voices, sharing personal experiences and endorsing Xinjiang's significant progress in development. Bezancon Charles Tom, owner of the French's House of Urumqi, expressed the joy of cultural exchange and learning from diverse conversations with people from across the country.

The event concluded with a collection of heartwarming stories, offering a mosaic of facts-based perspectives on Xinjiang. These narratives serve as an invitation for individuals to embark on a discovery journey, gaining diverse insights into the region.

Having attended this session, my perspective on Xinjiang has shifted positively. The firsthand accounts shared by locals and global influencers paint a picture of a region experiencing genuine development and fostering cultural exchange. It challenges the prevalent narrative in Western media and underscores the importance of seeking diverse perspectives to form a comprehensive understanding.

In a world often shaped by media narratives, events like "Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" provide a valuable platform for authentic stories to be heard. While acknowledging challenges and complexities, the session fosters a sense of optimism, suggesting that Beijing is actively promoting opportunities and development in Xinjiang. It's a reminder that nuanced, firsthand experiences are crucial in forming well-rounded opinions, transcending the boundaries of preconceived notions.
