Starting from April 2025, European Union citizens traveling to the UK without a visa will need to pay a £10 fee under a new electronic travel authorization (ETA) rule.

This step is a significant shift from the current system, where Europeans can visit without a visa or fee.

The UK government announced that this change aims to improve border security and digitize immigration processes.

The fee will apply to all visitors, including children except for British and Irish citizens.

Before this rule extends to Europeans, citizens from the US will need an ETA starting November 27, 2024. Countries like Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are already part of this scheme.

This move is expected to enhance security checks and contribute to the UK’s tourism sector which is projected to generate over £32 billion this year.

What is the ETA?

ETAs are digitally linked to a traveler's passport and ensure that improved security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK, helping to prevent abuse of the country's immigration system.

What are the restrictions on an ETA?

The ETA allows visitors to stay in the UK for up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, short-term studies, or visiting friends and family, there are several restrictions. ETA holders cannot get married, claim benefits, or reside in the country through frequent visits.

According to the UK government, to apply for a standard visitor visa here's what Pakistanis must do:

1) Apply for a UK visitor visa: Travelers from Pakistan must apply for a standard visitor visa which allows visits for tourism, business, or short-term study for up to six months.

2) Complete the online application: Visit the UK government visa application from the website and fill out the online form. You'll need to provide personal details, travel plans, and reasons for your visit.

3) Pay the visa fee: For a Standard Visitor Visa, the current fee is £115 (Rs 12,700).

4) Submit documents: Submit the following documents

Passport (valid for the duration of your stay)

Proof of sufficient funds for your visit

Details of Accommodation

Invitation letter (if applicable)

Employment or study documents (if relevant)

5) Attend the biometric appointment: You'll need to schedule an appointment at a visa application center to submit your biometrics.

6) Wait for visa decision: Visa processing can take up to three weeks so it’s best to apply before your travel dates.
