Former defence minister Pervez Khattak has announced he is stepping down as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad late Thursday, he said he finds it difficult to continue serving as the party’s KP chapter president amid the prevailing political crisis.

“Whatever happened in this country was not good,” he said, adding that he has already condemned the May 9 incidents.

“The political environment of the country is no good,” he said, adding that he would announce his future line of action after consulting his friends and party colleagues.

PTI activists took to the streets to vent their spleen against the arrest of Imran Khan in a corruption case last month.

Angry protesters damaged public property, attacked state assets and stormed sensitive installations.

They stormed the GHQ in Rawalpindi, Corps Commander House in Lahore and Radio Pakistan in Peshawar too. Innocent people lost their lives and the violent protest left a trail of destruction.

Several party leaders and lawmakers – including Shireen Mazari, Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Malik Amin Aslam, Mahmood Moulvi, Aftab Siddiqui, Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, Murad Raas, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Mussarrat Jamshed Cheema and her spouse Jamshed Cheema, – parted way with Imran Khan.
