The Manghopir police have allegedly been protecting the prime accused of torturing a team of 24NewsHD TV channel in Ramzan Goth where they visited to cover a story on water worries.

The incident took place on Monday when a group of miscreants unleashed an attack on the media team.  A team member, Solat Jafri, approached the local police for help but they sprang into action to protect the mafia men by making fake arrests.

According to the United Nations, Karachi is the world's third most affected city when it comes to lack of water. This dearth has led to the birth of the water mafia which has been minting money through operating hundreds of illegal pumping stations in the city of 17 million people.

Eighty per cent of water is pumped to homes through a 10,000km network of pipelines, and the rest is supplied through tankers. Reportedly, more than 10 million gallons per day (MGD) is stolen from the system and illegal water tankers transport the stolen water.

The authorities launched many operations to get rid of this mafia but to no avail. Reports point out that many complaints have been lodged but the police don’t act upon them.
