Federal minister for energy has constituted a committee for the conversion of three Independent Power Producers (IPPs) on imported coal to Thar coal, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The aim is to save $800 million annually on coal prices and reduce end-consumer rates by about Rs3 per unit.
The committee, led by the Additional Secretary of the Power Division, will engage with all stakeholders to conduct technical and financial analysis for the conversion of the CPEC imported coal projects; i.e., Sahiwal, Port Qasim, and Hub to Thar coal.
This initiative is expected to leverage the local coal reserves, reducing dependency on imported fuel and promoting sustainable energy practices.
The committee will also assess the logistics of transporting coal from the Thar mines to the project sites, ensuring efficient and cost-effective solutions are in place.
Based on the findings of informational studies, the committee will present recommendations and an implementation plan to the ministry.
