Jamaat-i-Islami also moves SC for timely elections in country

The Jamaat-i-Islami on Tuesday also filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking general elections in the country within 90 days after the dissolution of National Assembly which was packed up by President Arif Alvi on August 9 on the advice of former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The constitutional petition was filed by JI Naib Amir Liaquat Baloch through his lawyer.
In the petition, the apex court was prayed to issue order for holding general vote across the country within 90 days.
The court was further requested to order the Election Commission of Pakistan to issue election schedule, and relevant institutions must be directed to assist the commission in holding elections in the country.
The petition made the ECP, federal government and caretaker provincial governments respondents in the case.
On Monday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf approached the Supreme Court to seek a direction for President Dr Arif Alvi to announce a date for holding the general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly.
Filed by Secretary General PTI Omar Ayub, the petition has also requested the apex court to order the Election Commission of Pakistan to issue an election schedule accordingly, besides the governors of Sindh, Balochistan, the Punjab and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa be directed to announce the date of elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the respective assemblies or in accordance with the SC judgement in the Punjab assembly election case.
