First winter rain in Karachi: People in trouble water, Mayor in action

First winter rain lashed the Sindh provincial capital on Saturday night, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.

The torrential rain inundated various roads of the City of the Quaid while rainwater gushed into the Civil Hospital, leaving patients, attendants and paramedics in the lurch.

Rescuers too landed in trouble water.. The situation prompted Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to urge people to avoid unnecessary movement.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he said: “Please avoid unnecessary movement. It’s still raining in different areas. Teams have been deployed to clear the major arteries of the city.

“Naalaas are flowing at full capacity. Some of the pumping stations have shut down. Issues are being addressed. Will keep people posted.”

Later, he visited the affected area and shared the updates with the people.

 The office of the South deputy commissioner also appealed to the people to avoid coming out unnecessarily to avert any untoward incident.

He added that “almost all teams have got stuck up in traffic congestion” and drainage efforts were being impeded.

Reports of power cuts in various areas promoted K-Electric to issue an advisory asking people to adopt safety measures and avoid unnecessary travel.

Meanwhile, a Met Office report said that a heavy spell of rain is visible in the northern area on the radar, while there may be light and moderate rain in the southern area of the city. K Electric's field staff is on high alert

According to the Met Office, the highest rain was recorded at PAF Faisal Base (75 mm), followed by Malir (64mm), Surjani Town (63.8mm), Keamari (55mm), Quaidabad (52mm), Old Airport area (51mm), Gulshan-i-Hadeed (50mm), PAF Masroor Base (47.2mm), Jinnah Terminal (42mm), Saadi Town (37.6mm), North Karachi (33.6mm), University Road (30mm), Gulshan-i-Maymar (23.8mm), Nazimabad (23.5mm) and Korangi (15mm).
