A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team on Wednesday served summons on former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi for June 8 and June 13 respectively to record their statements in the Al-Qadir Trust probe.

According to the 214NewsHD TV channel, the NAB Rawalpindi team led by Inspector Muhammad Shafiq arrived at Imran Khan’s residence at Zaman Park. The security staff allowed the bureau’s team to go inside and hand over the notices.

According to the sources, the anti-graft watchdog’s Rawalpindi chapter summoned Imran Khan on June 8 and Bushra Bibi on June 13 to investigate them in the £190 million transfer scam case. The notices directed both the former premier and former first lady to appear in person to join the investigation regarding the alleged financial irregularities.

They have been asked to bring relevant records to present before the NAB team. The NAB team left after receiving the notices.

The case revolves around the freezing of approximately £20 million by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) on December 14, 2018, from the bank accounts of two Pakistani nationals, Ahmad Riaz Malik and Mubashra Ali Malik, who is the wife of Ahmad Ali Riaz. The frozen funds were seized under the UK’s Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. Subsequently, on August 12, 2019, the NCA froze an additional £199.7 million held in the bank accounts of Malik Riaz, along with a property located at 1 Hyde Park Place, under the same act.

According to NAB, these frozen funds were intended to be repatriated to the national exchequer of Pakistan, as specified in a note dated December 2, 2019. However, instead of transferring the funds to the state, they were allegedly dishonestly and maliciously adjusted against the liability of Bahria Town Ltd. Karachi (BTLK). The funds were transferred to a designated account meant for depositing the liability of BTLK.

Earlier, the NAB had summoned the couple for an investigation into the alleged misuse of authority as public office holders in aiding and abetting the illegal transfer of £190 million, for personal gains, but they did not appear before the bureau.

However, Mr. Imran Khan submitted a detailed reply to the NAB, saying he was neither the custodian of the document signed between property tycoon Malik Riaz’s family and the National Crime Agency (NCA), UK, nor he had any copy of it.

“All the allegations made by you (NAB) in the call-up notice are absolutely false, frivolous and concocted, and based on a deliberate misconception of law and facts, and baseless conjectures and surmises,” the PTI chief said in his reply.
