The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday sought an answer on the formation of joint investigation team (JIT) against 436 people nominated in the Panama Papers case, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood conducting the hearing during which the lawyer representing Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) requested to form a judicial commission in the Panama Papers case.

“After seven years, now you have come to know that this is a matter of public interest? Back then, was the purpose of Panama Papers case to target one family only?” Justice Sardar Tariq questioned.

“That was the Panama case. This is also the Panama case. Why the court had not been told at that time that this is the matter of all people and should be heard together?” he added.

The court sought a reply on forming a JIT against 436 people nominated in the Panama Papers case.

“The Panama Papers case was declared admissible by five judges of the Supreme Court on November 3, 2016. It should be told why had the institutions including NAB, FIA, and Anti-Corruption not been approached against the people nominated in the Panama Papers?” the court said.

“How can the Supreme Court conduct investigations in the presence of investigative bodies such as FBR, State Bank, NAB?” it questioned.

“If the Supreme Court formed a judicial commission in the presence of these investigative agencies, how will they do their work?” it added.

“How can the court give ruling without hearing the 436 nominated people in Panama case?” it questioned further.

Hearing of the case was then adjourned for one month.
