A major section of a protective embankment near the Bulgar access bridge in Ghanche district collapsed on Wednesday morning after a sharp rise in water flow through the Thalay Nala, raising concerns about the safety of nearby communities.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel reports, water levels in the stream increased rapidly, causing severe erosion along the protective structure situated beyond the Bulgar link bridge.
The embankment had been under increasing pressure as the fast-moving water continued to cut into its foundations.
Local sources said a substantial portion of the safety bund gave way at around 7am, exposing surrounding settlements to the risk of flooding and further erosion.
Residents have expressed growing concern over the potential impact on homes, infrastructure and agricultural land in the area.
The collapse has heightened fears among people living near the affected site, with community members warning that additional sections of the embankment could fail if water levels continue to rise.
According to local reports, no effective measures had been taken by the district administration or the Bulgar Committee by the time this report was filed.
Residents have called for immediate intervention to stabilise the area and prevent further damage.
Ghanche District is the easternmost district of Gilgit-Baltistan. With its capital at Khaplu, it borders China and the Line of Control.
Known as Pakistan's "Third Pole", it offers dramatic landscapes, glacial rivers, and traditional Balti culture and is the gateway to the Karakoram's highest peaks, including K2.
