Gmail users on smartphones are about to see a deeper integration of generative AI directly in their inboxes. Google has begun rolling out automatic, AI-generated summaries for emails—marking a shift in its Gemini assistant from an optional feature to a more prominent default presence.
Previously, users had to tap a “Summarize this email” button to get a quick overview of lengthy threads or conversations with multiple replies. Now, that step is being eliminated. The Gmail app for Android and iOS will automatically display a summary card at the top of certain emails, with Gemini determining when a summary is likely to be useful—typically for longer or more complex threads.
These summaries are presented in concise bullet points and update dynamically as new replies are added, helping users stay on top of conversations without scrolling through every message.
The feature is currently rolling out to Google Workspace users, Google One AI Premium subscribers, and those with Gemini Education add-ons. For now, it's limited to English-language emails and available only on mobile devices. Google expects the rollout to take approximately two weeks. There’s no word yet on when, or if, the feature will be extended to standard Gmail accounts or desktop users, though recent developments suggest a wider rollout could follow.
For users who prefer a more traditional experience, an opt-out is available—but with caveats. Disabling automatic summaries requires turning off Gmail’s “smart features,” which also disables tools like Smart Compose, Smart Reply, package tracking, and high-priority notifications. However, manual summaries can still be requested if needed.
The technology behind these summaries is powered by large language models—the same kind of AI that drives chatbots and digital assistants. While the feature enhances convenience, it also means that the content of your emails may be processed by Google’s AI systems for further training and refinement.
Google’s move to embed AI summaries more deeply into Gmail reflects a broader industry trend: bringing generative AI into everyday productivity tools. Summarization is one of the most practical and user-friendly applications of GenAI, especially for those who routinely navigate dense or lengthy email conversations.
While many users may welcome the convenience, others might find the summaries unnecessary or even intrusive—particularly for shorter messages. Still, Google is betting that the majority will embrace this evolution as AI becomes a more integral part of the Gmail experience.
