Some characters leave a lasting mark on television history, and Khirad from Humsafar is undoubtedly one of them. More than a decade after the drama captivated audiences across the globe, superstar Mahira Khan has revisited the memories behind her unforgettable portrayal, sharing heartfelt behind-the-scenes details that helped shape one of Pakistani television's most beloved characters.
A viral video circulating online features Mahira opening up about her experience of playing Khirad and the valuable guidance she received during the early stages of her acting career.
Reflecting on her journey, Mahira Khan stated: “Humsafar, jab mein ny kiya tha tou I was very new. Aap ye samjh lain ky mera pehla dosra serial tha to mujy yaad hai us waqt us mein Sarmad ny mujy ek hi cheez kahi thi us ny kaha tha dekho gangu abhi tumhay acting ky troops nahi pata technically tummy nahi pata, tou ek cheez kahu ga sachai sy dialogue bas bol dena, maan lo ky tum khirad ho aur tum ny sachi sachi dialogue bol diye. Dosri baat, ek din jab mein scene kar rahi thi tou wo aye mery pass aur unhon ny kaha tummy pata hai khirad ka matlab kiya hai aur mein ny kaha nahi Sarmad mujy tou nahi pata. Acha ye socho ky kis gaany mein istemal howa hai. Foran mein ny bola junoon jo ek band hai us ky gaany mei istemal howa to us ny btaya ky Iqbal ka poetry hai aur khirad ka matlab hai wisdom zahanat. Wo ek moment tha jahan mujy ek dm sy click howa ky acha ye mujy ye larki jiska naam khirad hai meinusko is tarha pkay kru gi. So, that time khirad even stayed with me.” (When I did Humsafar, I was still very new. You could say it was only my first or second drama serial. I remember that at the time, Sarmad told me just one thing. He said, ‘Look, Gangu, technically you don’t know the tools of acting yet, you don’t fully understand the craft. So I’ll tell you one thing: just deliver the dialogues with honesty. Imagine that you are Khirad and simply say the lines truthfully.’
Another thing happened one day while I was shooting a scene. Sarmad came up to me and asked, ‘Do you know what Khirad means?’ I said, ‘No, Sarmad, I don’t know.’ He then said, ‘Think about where you’ve heard the word used before.’ Immediately, I remembered that it had been used in a song by the band Junoon. He then explained that it comes from Allama Iqbal’s poetry and that Khirad means wisdom and intellect.
That was a moment when something suddenly clicked for me. I thought, ‘Alright, this is how I’m going to understand and portray this girl whose name is Khirad.’ From that point on, Khirad stayed with me.)
