Punjab Wildlife Department has announced January 5, 2026, as the final deadline for the mandatory declaration and registration of parrots, making it clear that no further extensions will be granted beyond this date, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday.
According to a spokesperson for the Wildlife Department, the declaration process, already extended twice in the past, will conclude permanently on January 5; after that, strict legal action and fines will be imposed on owners found keeping unregistered parrots.
The Punjab government has introduced a new law to regulate the keeping and trade of pet parrots, a step aimed at curbing illegal sales and safeguarding exotic species such as the Alexandrine Parakeet.
Under the legislation, Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, Pink-collared, and Plum-headed parrots have been placed under a mandatory registration system and included in the second schedule.
A fee of Rs 1,000 will be charged for the registration of each parrot.
Officials revealed that more than 100,000 parrots have already been declared and registered under the ongoing campaign.
However, authorities believe that a significant number of parrots remain undocumented, prompting the issuance of a final warning.
The Punjab government urged all parrot owners to complete the declaration process before January 5, stressing that possession of unregistered parrots after the deadline will result in fines and confiscation of birds.
