The New Year began in tragedy for Hollywood legend Tommy Lee Jones after his daughter, former child actress Victoria Kafka Jones, was discovered dead inside a prestigious San Francisco hotel in the early hours of January 1. She was just 34 years old.
Emergency services were called to the Fairmont San Francisco shortly before 3 a.m.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed it received a request for medical assistance at 2:52 a.m. on Thursday.
First responders rushed to the hotel, where they carried out an on-site medical assessment. Despite efforts to revive her, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Medical Examiner were also dispatched to the location. At this stage, authorities have not disclosed a cause of death.
A source familiar with the incident described the grim discovery, telling the Daily Mail: "A white female around her mid-30s was found unresponsive and the hotel staff was alerted," adding, "CPR was done, but she was pronounced deceased by the emergency/ambulance crew that responded to the scene."
The Daily Mail later confirmed the woman was Victoria Kafka Jones.
Entertainment outlet TMZ was the first to report the death, noting that once she was pronounced dead, the scene was formally handed over to police investigators.
Victoria was the daughter of Tommy Lee Jones and his second wife, Kimberlea Cloughley. The former couple were married from 1981 until 1996 and share two children: Victoria and her older brother Austin, now 42.
Following the incident, the Daily Mail reached out to representatives for Tommy Lee Jones, as well as officials at the Fairmont San Francisco and the San Francisco Police Department, seeking comment.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department confirmed police involvement, saying: "On 1/1/26 at approximately 3:14 a.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to a hotel located on the 900 block of Mason street regarding a report of a deceased person."
The statement continued: "At the scene, officers met with medics, who declared the adult female deceased. The Medical Examiner arrived on scene and conducted an investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD."
Born on September 3, 1991, Victoria stepped briefly into the spotlight as a child, making her film debut in 2002 with a small role in her father’s blockbuster sequel Men in Black II. She went on to appear in several acting projects during her youth, including a 2005 episode of One Tree Hill and a role in the Western drama The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, a film directed by her father and released the same year.
Although she did not pursue an acting career into adulthood, Victoria occasionally joined her famous father at high-profile industry events.
In 2017, she appeared alongside him at the ArcLight Hollywood premiere of Just Getting Started, which also starred Morgan Freeman and Rene Russo. That same year, she accompanied Jones to the opening of the Tokyo International Film Festival, where he served as president of the international competition jury.
Tommy Lee Jones had previously spoken with pride about directing his daughter and her abilities as a performer. While promoting The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, he praised her talent, saying: "She’s a good actress, has her SAG card, speaks impeccable Spanish." He also explained her early language skills, noting: "When she was a baby, I told Leticia, her nurse, to speak to her in Spanish."
In a separate interview, Jones shared a lighthearted story illustrating his daughter’s early exposure to the discipline of filmmaking. Recalling her time on set at age 14, he said: "She had to get up at 5am for her part. One morning, she wouldn’t get out of bed. I said: "Honey, this is work." But she wouldn’t budge."
He added with dry humor: "So I fired her. Then, without telling me, the production staff went over and woke her and rushed her out to the set just in time."
As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Victoria Kafka Jones’ death, the loss has cast a somber shadow over the start of the new year for one of Hollywood’s most respected figures.
