Heaps of debris dumped on the roof of a tuition center in Kahna area of Lahore caused it to collapse on Tuesday evening, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A report, submitted to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday, said it was height of irresponsibility to dump sand on the roof made of TR Garder, especially in the presence of children.
Tiles and the presence of labourers on the roof further weakened the roof.
The report read that the weak structure could not withstand such a heavy weight, and eventually came crashing down.
It further stated that a female teacher and 20 children were present in the room when its roof collapsed. “As many as 14 kids were killed, while six were injured,” it said, adding that children died because of too many injuries on their skulls. “However, no negligence on the part of any official of any concerned government department has been found,” the report elaborated.
As many as five people, including the house owner and his brother, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, investigators have said that gross criminal negligence was a cause of the roof collapse.
Investigation Wing of the police department said that a case would be registered against government employees if they were found negligent.
Furthermore, the Wing said that the injured woman was not a suspect in the case.
However, it said that she could be questioned in order to get to those whose negligence led to the incident.
Board formed for treatment of injured teacher
Meanwhile, a four-member medical board has been constituted for the treatment of the female teacher, Anila Rehan, who had been injured in the incident.
Professor Dr. Khurram Salim of General Hospital, Lahore is heading the board, while other members are Neurosurgeon Professor Syed Shahzad Hussain, Orthopedic Surgeon Professor Javed Hassan Raza, and General Surgeon Dr. Saeed Mehmood.
