Salman Farooqi, the main accused in the shocking Karachi Defense torture case, has been arrested, but his stay in police custody has raised serious questions about the professionalism of law enforcement authorities, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Monday.
Farooqi, accused of brutally assaulting a motorcyclist in front of the victim’s sisters after a minor traffic accident on Khayaban-e-Ittehad, was detained and transferred to Gizri Police Station.
However, a photo of the accused smiling in an open lock-up — with the latch visibly unfastened — went viral, sparking widespread criticism of the police’s handling of the case.
The image, which appeared to show Farooqi posing for a casual photo session rather than being held securely in custody, has led to public outrage and demands for accountability. Observers noted that the relaxed demeanor of the accused and the apparent lack of proper lock-up procedures highlighted glaring negligence.
Speaking to 24 News, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho confirmed the arrest and stated that Farooqi would be prosecuted through the courts.
“The accused has fallen into the clutches of the law and will be punished. If required, he will undergo medical testing,” Odho said, adding that a sentence of three to five years could be handed down, depending on court proceedings.
DIG South Asad Raza also provided updates, stating that police had conducted raids on Farooqi’s residence and office. Two of the accused’s vehicles, including a Mercedes involved in the incident, have been taken into custody. He added that the suspect’s criminal record (CRO) is being examined and a full investigation is underway.
According to police, a case was registered based on the complaint of a citizen who captured the assault on video. The victim of the violence is also being contacted to formally record his statement.
Despite the victim’s sisters reportedly pleading for mercy during the incident, Farooqi allegedly continued to beat the young man. The police now face growing pressure to ensure justice is served and to address the procedural failings that allowed the accused to treat his arrest with apparent impunity.
