Electricity consumers will receive a net relief of 20 paisa per unit in June 2026 as the benefit from the quarterly tariff adjustment outweighs the increase arising from the monthly fuel cost adjustment.
According to official calculations, the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for April 2026 resulted in an increase of Rs1.73 per unit. However, this was offset by a negative quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA) of Rs1.93 per unit for the January-March quarter, resulting in a net reduction of 20 paisa per unit for consumers.
Officials said the adjustment means electricity prices in June will remain effectively unchanged compared to the January-May period, despite upward pressure on fuel costs.
The government attributed the limited increase in the monthly fuel adjustment to measures taken during a global energy crisis in April.
Officials said tensions arising from the Iran-US conflict disrupted RLNG supplies and pushed expected Brent crude oil prices to around $120 per barrel from nearly $70 per barrel.
Under normal circumstances, officials said, such conditions could have resulted in an additional fuel adjustment burden of Rs5 to Rs6 per unit on consumers.
However, the government introduced measures including load management of about two to 2.25 hours per day, early market closures, additional allocation of local gas and limited use of furnace oil to contain the impact.
As a result, the monthly fuel adjustment was restricted to Rs1.73 per unit, avoiding what officials described as a potential burden of around Rs38 billion on consumers during April.
The negative quarterly adjustment of Rs1.93 per unit, amounting to approximately Rs65 billion, was attributed to administrative reforms, lower line losses, higher electricity demand, tariff stabilisation measures and incremental tariff packages.
Officials said the combined impact of the monthly and quarterly adjustments translates into a net consumer benefit of about Rs46 billion compared to the expected base tariff.
They said the figures demonstrate that the reference tariff was set prudently and that policy measures helped shield consumers from the full impact of global and regional energy market pressures.
