Renowned Urdu poet Nasir Kazmi, who revolutionized romantic poetry with his unique style, is being remembered on his 53rd death anniversary today, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported.
Despite the passage of over five decades, Kazmi’s poetry remains as fresh and touching as ever, with unforgettable ghazals like "Dil Dhadakne Ka Sabab Yaad Aaya," "Woh Teri Yaad Thi Ab Yaad Aaya," and "Gham Hai Ya Khushi Hai Tu.".
Born on December 8, 1925, in Ambala, Kazmi's poetry resonated with themes of moonlit nights, rain, solitude, and longing, crafted in short verses (Chhoti Beher), making them timeless. His collections include Berg-i-Nai (1952), Deewaan (1972), Pehli Baarish (1975), Hijr Ki Raat Ka Sitara, and Nishat-i-Khwab (1977).
Kazmi’s poetic influence extended beyond Pakistan, with his verses used in Bollywood films and PTV dramas. Recognizing his literary contributions, Pakistan Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in 2013 in his honor.
His sons Basir Sultan Kazmi and Hassan Sultan Kazmi followed literary and academic pursuits, with Basir earning an MBE for poetry in the UK, while Hassan retired as an economics professor after serving at prestigious institutions in Lahore.
Nasir Kazmi passed away on March 2, 1972, due to stomach cancer and was laid to rest in Momanpura graveyard, Lahore. His poetry continues to inspire generations, keeping his legacy alive.
