The federal government of Pakistan has decided to formally issue a notice to India over its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, sources told 24NewsHD TV Channel on Friday.
According to sources within the Indus Commission, emergency legal and constitutional consultations are currently underway. Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Water Resources, and Law have already completed preliminary preparations for the move.
“The notice will demand clear justifications from India for suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, a pact under which Pakistan holds firm legal precedence,” sources said, adding that the country is considering registering a strong protest at international forums to expose India’s water aggression.
Sources expressed optimism that India may be forced to reconsider its decision under international pressure. They further confirmed that all steps will be subject to final approval by the federal cabinet.
Meanwhile, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman issued a strong statement, saying Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has delivered a clear message to India: “Do not miscalculate Pakistan’s resolve. Any aggression against our rivers will be met with a full response.”
She stated, “We are not war-seekers but are fully prepared to respond. An attack on our waters is an attack on national sovereignty.”
Senator Rehman also vowed that Pakistan would go to the last limit to protect its rivers. “The people of Pakistan are peace-loving, but they are ready to defend themselves. Enemies of our water resources will be taught a lesson,” she added.
