Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket, the New Zealand Cricket Board confirmed on Sunday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
In a post on social media platform X, the board confirmed Williamson’s decision, adding that the star cricketer would not be part of the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies.
The statement said Williamson chose to step away from the shortest format in order to focus on the upcoming Test series scheduled for December.
Williamson, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished cricketers, is the second-highest run-scorer for his country in T20 internationals.
Since making his T20I debut in 2011, he represented New Zealand in 93 matches, scoring 2,575 runs, including 18 half-centuries.
Under his captaincy, New Zealand reached the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup twice and made it to the final once a testament to his leadership and consistency in the format.
Williamson’s decision marks the end of an era in New Zealand’s T20 cricket, as fans and teammates paid tribute to his calm leadership and steady performances across more than a decade of international play.
