In a shocking incident, a newborn reportedly sold to cover medical expenses at a private hospital in Memon Goth was recovered by police after a swift operation, SSP Malir Abdul Khaliq Pirzada confirmed on Sunday.
According to police, the infant had been sold by hospital staff after the parents failed to pay the delivery charges. Acting on a tip-off, Malir Police conducted a timely raid and rescued the newborn, later reuniting the child with the parents.
SSP Pirzada said the clinic where the baby was born has been sealed following the discovery. He added that the hospital’s owner, Dr. Zahra, and an employee identified as Shama Baloch were named in the case. Raids were carried out to arrest both suspects, but they managed to evade capture.
Investigations revealed that Shama Baloch, who initially posed as an outsider offering to pay the family’s hospital expenses, was in fact an employee of the same facility. Police said both women were allegedly involved in selling the newborn in Punjab.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, while the recovered infant has been safely returned to the parents.
SSP Pirzada said the case highlights the urgent need for tighter oversight of private healthcare facilities to prevent such “heinous and inhumane acts.”
