Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has decided to challenge Punjab Local Government Act 2025 in High Court on Monday and in this regard, representation was submitted by Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood, Ijaz Shafi, Munir Ahmed and Shabbir Ismail, reported 24NewsHDTV Channel.
PTI representations sent to high officials including President, Prime Minister, Governor Punjab, Chief Minister Punjab.
According to the PTI legal team, several provisions of LG 2025 Act were in conflict with Articles 17, 32 and 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan.
The detailed objections prepared by legal experts have been sent to the government.
PTI legal experts have raised serious concerns over the non-partisan, one-vote, multi-member union council model and said that non-partisan model weakens the role of political parties, moreover, control by administrative officers instead of local representatives will affect powers of the local governments.
The decentralization of financial powers will affect local autonomy as the powers to appoint administrators for an indefinite period is unconstitutional.
PTI petition demanded that direct election of the Union Council Chairman should be restored. A five-year term and a clear schedule should be made mandatory for the local government system. The executive intervention and strict restrictions on the powers of the administrator have been demanded.
PTI legal team will file an application in the Lahore High Court on Monday.
