Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to carry out a comprehensive assessment of damages caused by the devastating floods, while ordering urgent measures to safeguard the health and well-being of affected families.
Chairing a video link meeting with Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners, the Chief Minister instructed district administrations to conduct surveys of losses in flood-hit areas and ensure the provision of clean drinking water in all relief camps. She also emphasized the importance of fumigation, mosquito repellent sprays, and disinfectant treatments in tent cities to prevent the spread of diseases.
Maryam Nawaz said that people displaced by the floods had left their homes in a state of helplessness, stressing that the government must provide them with dignity and care. “There is a fear of diseases spreading after the water recedes; advance measures will have to be taken to meet this challenge,” she remarked.
The Chief Minister directed the Additional Chief Secretary South to make the best arrangements for victims in South Punjab and submit a detailed report on rescue and relief operations. She also ordered the provision of shoes, clothes, and other essential items for families in relief camps, with special focus on women and children.
In health-related measures, Maryam Nawaz directed an increase in clinics and field hospitals across flood-affected districts and called for mobile teams of gynecologists, gastroenterologists, and skin specialists to visit remote areas. She announced a special allowance for doctors, paramedical staff, and support personnel working in the relief zones.
The Chief Minister also instructed that tents and temporary shelters be arranged according to the needs of affected families. In a move to support farmers, she approved the hiring of agricultural interns in flood-hit areas and directed the provision of fodder and vaccinations for livestock to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized immediate restoration of electricity, gas, and LPG connections once floodwaters recede. She directed Deputy Commissioners to coordinate with departments for early restoration of essential services.
Cleanliness in relief camps was given top priority, with orders to deploy “Clean Punjab” teams, install garbage bins and covered waste containers, and ensure strict measures for disease prevention.
“The health of people living in flood relief camps is the first priority,” she said, underscoring the need for continuous efforts by all departments to remain on high alert. “People living in camps should have access to everything they need. Special attention must be paid to cleanliness and public health.
