The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Monday issued a flood alert for several areas due to possible rains from September 1 to 3.
A sharp increase in the flow of eastern rivers is expected due to possible rains during September 1 to 3, NDMA said in a present release.
The Sutlej River is currently experiencing an abnormal flow of 253,068 cusecs. Another flood of 300,000 cusecs is expected due to further rains and release from dams in the upper areas.
The Ravi River is currently experiencing a normal flow of 60,094 cusecs at Jasarr. The Ravi River is expected to reach 150,000 cusecs at Jasarr due to the release of water from Thane Dam and possible rains. Flooding is feared in the Nalah Ben, Basantar and Dek connected to the Ravi River due to possible rains in the upper areas.
The Chenab River is experiencing a low flow of 94,728 cusecs at Marala. Rains and release of water from upper dams including Salal, Baglihar, Dal Hasti in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to increase the flow significantly. Rains and release of water from dams in the upper areas may cause high-level flooding at Marala.
Flooding is expected in tributaries of Chenab River including Jammu Tawi and Manwar Tawi, including Palkhu. Low-lying and riverside areas are likely to be inundated, embankments may burst and crops and settlements may be submerged. Local population, farmers and relevant agencies should remain on high alert and take timely precautionary measures.
On the instructions of the Prime Minister, the NDMA is monitoring all rescue and relief activities. The National Emergency Operation Center is fully functional for 24 hours. NDMA is in touch with civil and military agencies.
People living on the banks of rivers and waterways should immediately move to safer places. Residents of areas at risk of flooding should cooperate with relevant agencies for evacuation. After evacuation, ensure that you follow the instructions for returning to your areas from temporary camps.
Immediately follow the instructions of the local administration and contact the relief teams in case of emergency. Avoid unnecessary travel to flood-affected areas. Keep an emergency kit (water, food, medicine) ready and save important documents.
