A wasp nest teeming with radiation has been discovered at the Savannah River Site (SRS), a sprawling Cold War-era nuclear facility near Aiken, South Carolina—raising more questions than answers about lingering contamination.
In a report released last week, the U.S. Department of Energy revealed that during a routine inspection, a wasp nest was found on a stanchion near massive underground tanks storing millions of gallons of liquid nuclear waste. The nest tested at an eye-popping 100,000 disintegrations per minute per 100 square centimeters (beta/gamma)—ten times the regulatory safety limit.
Despite the alarming numbers, the team that found it seemed unfazed. "The wasp nest was sprayed to kill wasps, then bagged as radiological waste," the report noted. "The ground and surrounding area did not have any contamination."
Investigators added that the incident wasn’t due to a new leak or containment failure. Instead, the nest was classified as "onsite legacy radioactive contamination"—a bureaucratic way of saying it’s leftover from the site's plutonium-producing past in the 1950s.
No Fallout-Style Mutant Wasps—Yet
The discovery, while bizarre, didn’t involve any oversized hornets or glowing insects reminiscent of Fallout video game monsters. In fact, officials clarified that no wasps were found on the nest at the time of inspection and that any individual insects would have carried much lower levels of contamination.
“The immediate area was secured and surveyed,” said Savannah River Mission Completion, the contractor managing the site. “No contamination was found in the area. There were no impacts to workers, the environment, or the public.”
The nest was located in the F Tank Farm, an active sector within the 310-square-mile site. Given that most wasps travel only a few hundred yards from their nests, officials suggested the radiation source was likely close by.
Watchdog Group Not Satisfied
However, environmental watchdogs aren’t ready to brush this off. The group Savannah River Site Watch criticized the report for its lack of detail, particularly about where the radiation came from and how the wasps were exposed.
Tom Clements, the group’s executive director, argued that identifying the type of wasp could offer crucial clues. Some wasps build with mud, others with chewed plant fibers—materials that may trace back to the contamination source.
“I’m as mad as a hornet that SRS didn’t explain where the radioactive waste came from or if there is some kind of leak from the waste tanks that the public should be aware of,” Clements told the Associated Press.
A Legacy of Contamination
For context, the Savannah River Site has generated more than 165 million gallons of liquid radioactive waste during its operational history. About 34 million gallons remain, stored across 43 active underground tanks. Eight tanks have been permanently retired, though critics have questioned the long-term integrity of such closures.
While this particular incident may not pose an immediate threat, it underscores ongoing concerns about legacy waste, monitoring gaps, and how even something as small as a wasp nest can shine a light on much larger issues.
