In a major crackdown on online hate speech, the Cyber Patrolling Cell of the Punjab Home Department has reported 932 social media links to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for spreading sectarian and provocative content, following directives from the Punjab Chief Minister, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Thursday.
So far, 74 individuals have been arrested across the province for inciting religious hatred and creating unrest through social media platforms, officials confirmed.
The Cyber Patrolling Cell, operating round the clock, is actively monitoring online spaces for content that promotes sectarianism and religious discord. The initiative is being carried out through a joint effort involving the Punjab Home Department, Punjab Police, Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR), and the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
Authorities emphasised that swift action is being taken against any online activity that threatens social harmony. The Cyber Patrolling and Quick Response Cell is also in continuous coordination with the Special Branch to ensure timely identification and action.
Officials reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards incitement and urged citizens to exercise caution and responsibility while using social media. “Do not share or promote sectarian content under any circumstances,” a government spokesperson warned.
