As many as 40 passengers lost their lives and eight others seriously injured when a bus fell into a ravine on Zhob-Sherani Highway in the border area between Balochitan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Friday morning, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The ill-fated passenger bus was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar when it met the accident in the Danasar area of Sherani District.
Special Assistant to Balochistan Chief Minister, Shahid Rind, cofirmed the death toll at 40 with eight inured.
An emergency has been declared in the hospital of Zhob and Sherani Districts while the rescue personnel were facing difficulties due to the mountainous terrain.
Soon after receiving the information about the accident, chief minister’s staff officer Syed Amin contacted the officials of the relevant district administrations, immediately setting off a rescue and relief operation.
Administrations from the border districts of both Balochistan and KP dispatched teams to the accident site.
As per the initial investigation, the bus was carrying its passengers as well as passengers from another bus which broke down on the way.
Shahid Rind said the investigators were trying to establish what caused the accident.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti expressed condolences on the tragic accident.
District Sherani Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hazrat Wali Khan Kakar confirmed that at least 20 people were dead and 10 injured in the horrible accident.
Wali Khan Kakar said that after receiving the report, district administration, rescue teams, along with ambulances, rushed to the spot and shifted the injured and dead bodies to a hospital.
The Deputy Commissioner Sherani said that the rescue operation was still under way.
According to Deputy Commissioner Kakar, the passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in the mountainous Danasar area, located near the junction of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said several passengers were killed and injured in the accident, prompting an immediate response from the district administration, rescue agencies, and relief teams.
Kakar said rescue personnel were carrying out operations to evacuate the injured, retrieve victims from the ravine, and provide urgent relief despite the difficult mountainous terrain.

Passengers’ account
According to the injured passengers, there were 45 people on board on the bus along with plastic drums filled with Iranian diesel.
Six of the drums were seized at the checkpost, the passengers said and added after leaving the checkpost a war of words started between the driver and the passengers.
An injured passenger claimed that after the verbal clash the driver suddenly turned the steering in one direction that led the bus to fall in the ravine.
Zardari expresses grief and sorrow
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed profound grief and sorrow over the passenger bus accident on the Zhob-Sherani Highway.
The President offered prayers for the forgiveness of those who lost their lives in the accident, extended heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families.
The President prayed for the swift and complete recovery of the injured, directing the relevant authorities to ensure the provision of all possible and best medical facilities to the injured.
The entire nation shareed equally the grief of the affected families in this tragic incident, President Zardari added.
