The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) is facing challenges in the upcoming 5G auction, with concerns arising over delays in the launch of 5G services. The 5G spectrum auction is now expected to take place by June 2025, with a commercial rollout of 5G services anticipated in the first quarter of 2026. According to PTA documents, the market assessment by PTA consultants has been completed, and consultations with stakeholders on telecom reforms are ongoing.
The auction process is currently focused on spectrum pricing and auction design. The advisory committee is expected to submit policy recommendations to the government within the next month, after which the government will issue a policy directive.
Delays in the merger of two telecom companies have contributed to these challenges, with several cases pending in court concerning the 2600 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 1800 MHz bands. Specifically, the unresolved 140 MHz spectrum case in the 2600 MHz band, a 6.6 MHz spectrum case in the 1800 MHz band, and a 10 MHz case in the 2100 MHz band are complicating the process.
The high cost of developing 5G infrastructure and the limited availability of 5G devices also present significant obstacles. However, the introduction of 5G is expected to improve data speeds and service quality. According to PTA documents, 5G will also lay the groundwork for advancing IT services in the country, driving foreign direct investment.
In addition to boosting GDP, the rollout of 5G services is expected to create new job opportunities and revolutionize key sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and industry. PTA also believes 5G will enhance e-governance and disaster management in Pakistan.
