Jim Carrey has firmly shut down bizarre online claims that he was cloned after his different appearance at the 51st Cesar Awards in Paris.
The 64 year old actor attended the prestigious French ceremony, often dubbed the French equivalent of the Oscars, where he accepted an honorary award.
But instead of just celebrating his achievement, social media quickly lit up with speculation over his changed look, with some users questioning whether it was truly him on stage.
According to his representative, the Hollywood star personally attended the ceremony, dismissing rumors of being cloned.
Cesar Awards general delegate Gregory Caulier also addressed the chatter, calling the controversy a non-issue and revealing that Carrey’s participation had been arranged months in advance.
Speaking to Variety, Caulier said the actor had spent eight months preparing and even rehearsing his speech in French, adding that Carrey was deeply moved by the Academy’s invitation.
Online speculation ranged from plastic surgery rumors to far more outlandish claims that the actor had been replaced by a clone with conspiracy theorists pointing to perceived differences in his eye color and even which hand he used to sign autographs.
Fuel was added to the frenzy when British drag artist Alexis Stone, known for elaborate celebrity transformations posted an Instagram image captioned “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” alongside what appeared to be a prosthetic mask.
The post left even celebrities confused, with Megan Fox and Lisa Rinna publicly questioning whether the impersonation was real.
Talking about cloned, it means creating an identical copy of a living organism, whether a cell, animal, or theoretically a human, using scientific methods.
In real science, cloning involves replicating DNA to produce a genetically identical version. The most famous real-world example is Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal successfully cloned from an adult cell in 1996.
However, human cloning has never been proven or publicly confirmed, and it remains illegal or heavily restricted in most countries.
Cloning became popular in Hollywood because it creates dramatic, mysterious, and futuristic storylines. It taps into themes like identity, immortality, secret experiments, and government conspiracies.
In pop culture, some internet users claim celebrities who look different have been cloned. These rumors usually start when, a star changes appearance (aging, weight change, cosmetic procedures), their behavior seems different, photos look unusual due to lighting or angles.
There is no scientific evidence supporting celebrity cloning. These are internet conspiracy theories, not facts.
Despite the noise, Carrey’s presence at the ceremony was marked by heartfelt moments. Joined on the red carpet by his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson, and partner Min Ah, he delivered an emotional speech entirely in French.
He thanked his family and paid tribute to his French ancestry, noting that his ancestor Marc François Carrey emigrated from Saint-Malo to Canada centuries ago, calling the honor a symbolic full circle moment.
Director Michel Gondry, who worked with Carrey on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, also reflected warmly on their collaboration during the ceremony.
Carrey’s appearance comes after years of wavering retirement talk. In 2022, while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he admitted he was probably retiring from acting, saying he felt fulfilled creatively and spiritually.
Yet he later reprised his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, joking that financial reasons played a part in his return. He is also set to appear in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
