A UK man has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting to setting fire to his own home twice in one night just so he could see firefighters in action.
Arsonists are obsessed with fire, but 26-year-old James Brown, from Northumberland, in the UK, has been described as having an obsession and a fascination with firefighters rather than fires.
In an ideal world, he would be a firefighter himself, but things didn’t work out that way, so he just settled for admiring firefighters from a distance and calling the fire department incessantly.
When that wasn’t enough anymore, he moved on to setting his own house on fire just to see the firefighters in action.
The incidents occurred on the night of September 9, 2023. Brown first reported a fire at his residence, claiming that sparks from the electrical meter had ignited some clothing.
Firefighters responded promptly, extinguished the blaze, and disconnected the electricity supply.
However, just 90 minutes later, Brown made another emergency call, stating that his bed had caught fire again, despite the power being cut off.
This raised suspicions among the emergency responders.
Further investigations revealed that over the past year, Brown had made approximately 80 emergency calls to the fire brigade, often recording their firefighting efforts with great enthusiasm.
His fascination with firefighting ultimately led him to commit arson on his own property to witness the emergency response firsthand.
The court found Brown guilty of two counts of arson and sentenced him accordingly. This case underscores the serious consequences of misusing emergency services and the potential dangers of such obsessive behavior.
