Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said categorically on Sunday that work on the BRT Red Line project in Karachi would not stop even if it invited the wrath of courts, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Speaking to the media during a visit to the site of the project, the minister said the provincial government was least concerned if it was issued contempt of court notice.
He, however, expressed the hope that courts would do justice in the case.
Memon said that work on the project had accelerated after the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) was given the contract.
He dispelled the impression that the government received kickbacks or was responsible for delay in the completion of the project. “We are aware of the difficulties people are facing. And we are not sitting idle,” he said, adding that the government apologized to the people for the inconvenience caused to them.
However, he went on to say, water pipes and electric poles could not be removed overnight. “It is difficult to work in cities. We can build a 300-kilometer-long road in Thar in just one year.”
He lamented that some people were politicizing the project.
The minister informed that the University Road would be opened for traffic within three months. “We will try to open mixed traffic lane by the end of July,” he informed.
In his message on World Press Freedom Day, Memon said he wanted to tell the media that the PPP believed in the freedom of press.
