Veteran politician and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said on Wednesday that not only the Kalabagh Dam but other dams should also be built in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Speaking to the media outside an accountability court (AC) in Rawalpindi, he said that dams were what the country required. “I have always stressed the need for building the Kalabagh Dam,” he said, adding, “Whenever I became a minister, I kept trying to convince those at the helm of affairs to build the dam.”

The farmers of Pakistan, the AML chief added, had been ruined. “For God’s sake, help them,” he implored.

When a reporter asked him about reports of the presidential form of government presently doing the rounds in the country, Rasheed said, “If that is the case, go ahead with it. But at the same time, build dams and do justice to the people. Because the poor people are already crushed.”

He went on to say that his nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, was among 108 those who had been convicted in the May 9 cases. “And now he has been handed a 10-year prison term in the fourth case as well. This is despite the fact that he was not in Faisalabad on that day.”

The AML chief appealed to those calling the shots in the country to think about poor PTI prisoners, whose families were finding it hard to make both ends meet in their absence.
