The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Wednesday issued a fresh weather update, warning that the ninth spell of monsoon rains is likely to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, bringing more downpours to the upper parts of the country and raising flood risks in southern and coastal regions, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
According to NDMA, heavy rainfall has already lashed Narowal, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujarat, and Lahore over the past 24 hours. From September 6, rains are also expected in South Punjab and South Sindh, including the coastal districts of Badin, Sujawal, and Tharparkar.
The authority cautioned that a flood situation has developed due to unusual rainfall and increased river inflows.
It said flood relays from Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej are expected to converge at Panjnad between September 4 and 5, potentially causing a severe flood situation. A preliminary assessment has already identified the areas most at risk, and relevant provincial disaster management authorities (PDMAs) have been alerted in advance.
NDMA urged residents of sensitive areas to strictly follow safety instructions issued by authorities and avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone regions.
On the special directives of the Prime Minister, relief operations are being carried out in coordination with government agencies, welfare organisations, and the Armed Forces. Nearly 5,700 tons of relief goods have so far been provided to flood-hit communities. Officials said efforts are underway to ensure the timely delivery of essential supplies through well-coordinated strategies.
