Heavy rains have inundated the premises of the District Jail and Sessions Court in Gujarat, forcing the transfer of hundreds of prisoners to other facilities, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Wednesday.
According to jail authorities, around 170 inmates have been shifted to jails in Lahore and Gujranwala due to the rising water level. Among them, 100 prisoners facing murder charges and on death row have been transferred to Lahore, while 70 female prisoners were moved to Gujranwala.
In addition, 1,000 prisoners have been relocated from the old barracks to the newly constructed barracks within the Gujarat District Jail. The facility currently houses approximately 1,500 prisoners.
Officials confirmed that 200 inmates had already been shifted to Jhelum jail five days earlier due to the worsening flood situation.
For the past seven days, jail authorities have also suspended the routine transfer of prisoners to courts citing safety concerns. Despite efforts to drain the water, the situation remains critical, with water levels showing little sign of receding.
