A court in Lahore has discharged Dr. Waqas Farooq, the son-in-law of PTI leader Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid, and two others from a case related to holding an election rally without permission and downloading election faxes of opponents, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Saturday.
The court also expressed regret over the arrest of Dr. Waqas Farooq, who is a professor at Hailey College of Commerce, Punjab University.
The accused were arrested on January 31 and presented in the identification parade on February 2. However, the investigating officer failed to identify them as the culprits. The court then ordered their release and dismissed the case against them.
Yousuf Wayne Advocate, the lawyer of the accused, argued that Dr. Waqas Farooq was arrested for being the son-in-law of PTI leader Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid. He said that the case was politically motivated and had no legal basis.
The case was registered under section 435/24 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Iqbal Town police station. The other two accused who were discharged are Javed Akhtar and Gulzar Masih.
