Guinness World Records has recognised a pet parrot in the United States as the world's oldest living pet parrot after it reached the age of 32 years and 28 days, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday.
The record-holding bird, a green parrot with a purple head named Spodles, is owned by a family in the US state of North Carolina.
According to the parrot's owner, Amanda Beth, she received Spodles as a gift from her mother in 1997 when she was 23 years old.
At the time, the bird was already around three years old.
She described Spodles as a talkative and noisy companion that has remained an important part of the family for decades.
The family celebrated the achievement on March 28 this year, when Spodles officially became the oldest living pet parrot recognised by Guinness World Records.
According to Guinness World Records, parrots of this type typically live between 15 and 20 years in captivity or domestic environments.
Spodles has significantly exceeded the species' average lifespan, making it an exceptional case.
