Azam Nazeer Tarar says Judges Elevation Committee will examine judges’ performance every year

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has announced that for the first time interviews will be conducted for the appointment of judges in the high court, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Addressing a lawyers ceremony in Lahore on Saturday, the Law Minister said a seven-member committee has been constituted for conducting interviews of the potential candidates.

“The committee will interview proposed names as the process to appoint judges should be transparent and on merit,” he said.

The minister said the government for the first time is introducing a constitutional mechanism to scrutinize judges’ performance.

He said the Judges Elevation Committee will examine judges’ working at the end of every year. “Rule of law is a must,” he added.

The minister Punjab Bar Council has been taking excellent steps for the betterment of the lawyers community.

He said when a court’s cause list is out in the evening the lawyer knows that what will happen to his case – either a verdict is on the way or his hair are gonna turn white. “All the judges are most respectable, but this is taxpayers’ money, when salaries and incentives are same then why is not the performance?” he asked.

The minister said the committee will send a reference to the judicial commission against a judge who would not fare well. “The committee will recommend removal of a judge on the basis of unsatisfactory performance,” he added.
