Actress and writer Mira Sethi has shed light on the controversy surrounding the slogan ‘Mera Jism Meri Marzi’ which translates My Body, My Choice a phrase that has sparked heated debates across Pakistan since it first appeared in the Aurat March.
Mira Sethi explained that the slogan is often misunderstood and deliberately misrepresented.
She stated that it is not about promoting vulgarity or rebellion, but rather about bodily autonomy and women's right to make decisions about their own lives.
“This slogan is about consent, agency, and freedom from violence,” Mira said.
“It means a woman should have the right to say no, to have control over her own body, whether it’s about marriage, childbirth, or personal safety.”
She added that conservative elements in society often twist the message to make it seem like women are trying to break social values, when in reality, the slogan demands basic human rights.
Mira Sethi, known for her bold views and progressive stance, urged people to engage in meaningful conversations rather than react emotionally to words they may not fully understand.
She emphasised the need for education and awareness to reduce the stigma around women’s rights in Pakistan.
The slogan has remained a focal point of the Aurat March each year, and with voices like Mira’s explaining its true context, the hope is to bridge the gap between differing perspectives and encourage respectful dialogue.
Mira Sethi’s explanation comes when the nation mourns the murder of teen TikToker Sana Yousaf, who, according to police, said no to the suspected killer’s advances.
