In a rare show of continuity between rival political regimes, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government has decided to carry forward one of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s flagship environmental initiatives—the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Program—under its new name, the Upscaling of Green Pakistan Program, for the fiscal year 2025–26.
According to budget documents, the government has proposed Rs 2.25 billion in funding for the next fiscal year to continue work on the green initiative.
The project, originally approved by ECNEC in August 2019, was launched during the PTI era with an ambitious goal to combat climate change through massive afforestation.
While the project has been rebranded, it remains essentially the same initiative, with a current estimated expenditure of Rs 32.81 billion by June 30, 2025, out of the total projected cost of Rs 81.83 billion. In the ongoing fiscal year, the government allocated Rs 5 billion to the program.
