The Wall Street Journal has claimed that the United States is unlikely to launch further military action against Iran unless American forces come under direct attack, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.
The WSJ report said President Donald Trump has informed his advisers that Washington will not return to war with Iran unless Iranian forces target US military personnel.
It added that the Trump administration is prioritising a diplomatic resolution and is seeking to prevent the conflict from expanding across the region.
Speaking separately, Trump said the United States wanted to resolve the crisis with Iran through a written agreement rather than through war.
Trump expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations, saying a deal could be reached within days and that both sides were moving closer to a formal agreement.
The US president said discussions were continuing on several key issues, including Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium.
He described the talks as positive and suggested that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could follow shortly after any agreement is signed.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said communication between Tehran and Washington had not been cut off, although negotiations had yet to yield a significant breakthrough.
In an interview with a Lebanese television channel, Araghchi said Iran and the United States were currently reviewing draft proposals that had been exchanged through diplomatic channels. While contacts remained active, he noted that no tangible progress had been achieved so far.
The Iranian foreign minister also issued a warning to Israel, saying Tehran would respond decisively if Beirut came under attack. He said Iran had made its position clear and would not remain silent in the face of any military action against the Lebanese capital.
Araghchi warned that an attack on Beirut would have serious consequences and could trigger a full-scale resumption of hostilities in the region.
He added that when Israel threatened to strike Beirut's southern suburbs, Iran adopted what he described as a firm position and placed its armed forces on high alert for a potential response.
