Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani emphasised the vital importance of preserving Pakistan’s cultural heritage for future generations during the inaugural ceremony of CultuRise, a groundbreaking initiative focused on heritage education, awareness, and advocacy.
Addressing the ceremony as chief guest, Gilani lauded CultuRise as a modern and revolutionary effort aimed at protecting and promoting Pakistan's diverse cultural legacy. “Preservation of cultural heritage is essential for the awareness of generations, civilization and social values,” he said.
He highlighted that the presence of UNESCO representatives and members of the diplomatic community at the event underscores the global significance of cultural preservation and the value of international cooperation in safeguarding heritage.
Referring to landmarks like Al-Hamra, Buda Fort, Mohenjo Daro, Lahore Fort, and the historic gates of old Multan, Gilani noted that these sites are not just national treasures but part of the shared heritage of humanity.
“Our culture, art, and heritage are collective responsibilities. The Upper House of Parliament reiterates its full commitment to their preservation,” he affirmed.
Gilani proudly reflected on Pakistan’s civilizational roots, calling the nation a “bouquet of civilizations, languages, and traditions,” rooted in the legacies of Gandhara, the Indus Valley, and Mehrgarh. He praised the rich artisanal traditions of the country—from the blue tiles of Multan and the embroidery of Sindh and Balochistan, to the wood carvings of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—as living embodiments of the national identity.
However, he warned that urban expansion, neglect, and modern development pressures continue to threaten cultural landmarks. “It is our national duty to protect these treasures,” Gilani stressed.
He called for robust investment in education, capacity building, and public awareness campaigns to instill cultural consciousness. “Through our art and heritage, we can connect with the world, foster peace, harmony, and project a positive image of Pakistan,” he concluded.
