Leader of the House Ishaq Dar on Tuesday confirmed that the government was preparing to table the 27th Constitutional Amendment, assuring that the process would be conducted transparently and in accordance with parliamentary rules and law.
Speaking during a Senate session, Dar also called on the Senate chairman to expedite the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition, stressing that the matter now rests with the chair and that the government is not creating any obstacles. “The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition should definitely be done,” Dar said. “It is the Senate Chairman’s responsibility to look into the matter and appoint him soon according to the rules.”
Turning to legislative business, Dar acknowledged that “the 27th Constitutional Amendment is coming” and would be introduced “in line with the Constitution and the law.” He emphasized that the amendment would first be referred to the relevant standing committees for detailed scrutiny. “I assure Senator Ali Zafar that there will be a formal discussion on the 27th Amendment,” Dar added.
He proposed that members of the Senate’s Law and Justice Committee and the National Assembly’s Law and Justice Committee should meet jointly to deliberate on the amendment in one forum, ensuring transparency and coordination. “Talks have already been held with the Pakistan People’s Party,” Dar said, adding that consultations with other coalition partners would follow.
Dar also suggested that the government introduce the amendment in the Senate first, underscoring a commitment to inclusive and orderly legislative debate.
Senate Passes Three Key Bills
During the same sitting, the Senate approved three significant legislative measures.
Federal Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui presented the King Hamad University of Nursing and Associated Medical Sciences Bill 2025 and the Danish Schools Authority Bill 2025, both of which were passed unanimously.
In addition, Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh introduced the Ease of Doing Business Bill 2025, which also received Senate approval.
The day’s proceedings reflected a mix of political consensus-building and legislative productivity, with the government reiterating its resolve to conduct constitutional reform “transparently” while advancing key governance and education initiatives.
