Kangana Ranaut's latest release, Emergency, may not have made a significant impact at the box office, but the actress-turned-politician claims she’s been receiving a lot of praise for her performance. Recently, she took to Instagram Stories to share that she had received a beautiful Kanjeevaram silk saree as a gift for her "fearless storytelling" in Emergency.
In her post, Kangana also took a subtle jab at Bollywood award shows, writing, “This is so wonderful! I got a stunning woven saree for making #Emergency... so much better than receiving useless trophies."
Emergency, which hit theaters on January 17, stars Kangana as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Not only does she play the lead role, but she also directed the film. The movie delves into the 21-month period of Emergency imposed by Gandhi from 1975 to 1977, often regarded as one of the darkest chapters in post-independence India.
Alongside Kangana, the film features Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.
While Emergency received mixed reviews, with News18 Showsha giving it a 3-star rating, the film's pacing and structure were criticized. "While Emergency ambitiously covers multiple events, its structure leaves much to be desired. The first half feels drawn out, and the second half appears rushed. Some scenes, like Gandhi’s self-comparison to an old devil, feel distasteful and unnecessary," the review noted. Despite this, the film struggled at the box office, grossing just Rs 17 crore in India.
Recently, Kangana shared a picture of a handwritten note praising her performance in Emergency, which she claimed was sent to her by someone from the opposition. The note read, “Hey, saw Emergency yesterday. You are tooooo good! Love.” Kangana shared how the note came to her quietly and made her smile. "A little note of appreciation from the other side quietly came to me… and made me smile warmly," she wrote, adding the hashtags #emergency and #parliamentday.
