Torrential rain brought Mumbai to a standstill after nearly 200 millimetres of rainfall lashed the city within 12 hours, causing widespread flooding, traffic disruptions and damage to infrastructure, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.
According to Indian media reports, heavy downpours inundated low-lying areas, while several roads were submerged or damaged.
Flood-like conditions also affected railway services, disrupting train operations across parts of the city.
The intense rainfall damaged trees and buildings, with several roads caving in due to waterlogging.
The adverse weather also disrupted normal life in the neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai, as well as the Pune region.
In Pune, reports said landslides occurred in some areas, while floodwaters cut off road links.
Rescue teams evacuated residents from affected localities and shifted them to safer places.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city's eastern suburbs received an average of 186mm of rainfall between 8 am and 8 pm.
The western suburbs recorded 168mm, while the island city received 129mm during the same period.
Among the worst-hit areas, Vikhroli West recorded more than 260mm of rainfall in just 12 hours.
Other localities, including Powai, Bhandup, Malad, Kandivali, Jogeshwari and Andheri, each received more than 210mm of rain, leading to severe waterlogging and widespread disruption across the city.
