Popular Pakistani actress Faaiza Hasan has raised concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry, urging fellow actors to carefully review contracts before signing away rights related to their image, voice, and likeness.
Taking to Instagram, the actress shared a video message addressing members of Pakistan's acting fraternity, warning them about AI-related clauses that are increasingly appearing in agreements with production houses, television channels, and private producers.
In the video, Faaiza appealed to actors and actresses to thoroughly read and understand every aspect of their contracts, particularly provisions concerning artificial intelligence.
“Greetings! I have a request for my fellow actors and actresses: when you sign agreements with production houses, channels, or private producers, please read the contracts very carefully. Look closely at what is being stated regarding the AI clauses,” she said.
The actress noted that some AI-related provisions appear to have little or no relevance to actors working on television projects, yet continue to be included in contracts.
“Sometimes, these AI clauses have absolutely no relevance to us as drama makers or as actors performing in those dramas. These clauses are being added without proper explanation, and frankly, some of them make no sense to me,” she remarked.
Faaiza further advised artists to seek professional guidance before committing to any agreement.
“I request all actors to read, think, and understand the agreement thoroughly. If you do not understand it, consult a lawyer or contact the actors' association before signing. In my opinion, some of these AI clauses are absolutely not in our favour,” she stated.
Clarifying her intentions, the actress emphasized that her message was not directed against any specific production house or television network.
“The purpose of this video is not to hurt the sentiments of any production house or channel; it is purely for the purpose of awareness,” she added.
Expanding on her concerns in the caption accompanying the video, Faaiza warned that AI technology is increasingly being used as a tool to reduce actors' involvement in various production requirements, including publicity material and action sequences.
“Please read and review your contract very carefully before signing or beginning work,” she wrote. “The use of AI technology is now fast becoming a go-to technique to avoid taking more time from actors for various requirements such as publicity stills and action sequences.”
The actress stressed that any use of an actor's likeness, image, or voice should only take place with clear consent and a complete understanding of how the material will be used.
