Australian cricket icon Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket following his team's semi-final loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The 34-year-old top-scored for Australia in the match, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent a defeat in Dubai on Tuesday.
Smith informed his teammates after the match that he would be stepping away from ODIs with immediate effect.
Cricket Australia later confirmed in a statement that while Smith is retiring from the 50-over format, he will remain available for Test and T20 cricket.
Smith made his ODI debut in 2010 against the West Indies as a spin-bowling all-rounder before evolving into one of the finest batsmen of his generation.
Over his 14-year ODI career, he played 170 matches, amassing 5,800 runs at an impressive average of 43.28. His achievements include 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries, along with 28 wickets at an average of 34.67.
A key figure in Australia’s ICC World Cup-winning campaigns in 2015 and 2023, Smith captained the national side in the 50-over format from 2015 onwards.
His last match saw him lead the team once again, stepping in as interim captain for the injured Pat Cummins in the Champions Trophy semi-final.
In his final ODI innings, Smith played a crucial knock of 73 runs off 96 balls on a tricky Dubai surface, guiding Australia to a total of 264. However, India successfully chased the target to reach their third consecutive Champions Trophy final.
Smith's departure from ODIs marks the end of an era for Australian cricket as one of its most accomplished batsmen shifts his focus to the longest and shortest formats of the game.
