A rare public appearance by Hollywood comedian Jim Carrey in Paris has triggered a storm of speculation online, after the actor accepted a prestigious film honour in fluent French, while looking so different that some fans questioned whether it was really him.
The 64 year old Canadian American star attended the Cesar Awards, often considered the French equivalent of the Academy Awards, where he received an honorary prize celebrating his unforgettable comic performances and impact on global pop culture.
During the ceremony in Paris, Carrey surprised the audience by delivering his entire acceptance speech in French. Although his accent drew some playful attention, the crowd applauded the effort and warmly welcomed the actor’s tribute to French cinema.
However, the speech quickly became overshadowed by intense online speculation about the actor’s appearance.
Many viewers said the star looked unrecognisable, noting his shoulder length dyed hair, smoother facial features and rejuvenated eyelids.
Some social media users even questioned whether the man on stage was actually the famous comedian known for films such as The Mask, The Truman Show, and Bruce Almighty.
The dramatic change sparked a wave of conspiracy theories online. Some suggested the actor had used a body double, while others joked that artificial intelligence, cloning, or elaborate disguises might be involved.
Speculation intensified when British drag performer Alexis Stone, known for realistic celebrity transformations, posted photos on social media claiming to have impersonated Carrey at the ceremony.
The post showed prosthetic masks, wigs and makeup laid out on a table with the Eiffel Tower faintly visible in the background.
The claim quickly went viral, with celebrities including Katy Perry and Megan Fox reacting online and questioning whether the impersonation might be real.
Despite the rumours, organisers and the actor’s representatives swiftly dismissed the speculation.
Carrey’s publicist confirmed that the star personally attended the ceremony to accept the award. Officials from the César organisation also stressed that his appearance was genuine and had been planned months in advance.
According to event organisers, Carrey spent considerable time preparing his French speech and even asked for help refining the pronunciation of certain words. He reportedly attended the ceremony with his partner, family members and close friends.
The unusual controversy also highlighted how quickly rumours can spread on social media, especially when a celebrity who has largely stayed out of the spotlight suddenly reappears.
Carrey, who has spoken openly about feeling uneasy with fame, previously said in 2022 that he was fairly serious about stepping away from Hollywood.
Despite that statement, the actor has continued to appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, where he plays the eccentric villain Dr. Robotnik, a role that hides much of his real appearance behind exaggerated makeup and a massive moustache.
