A local court has sent PTI activist Sanam Javed to jail on a 14-day judicial remand in connection with a case registered over a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf rally held on February 8, where she and others were accused of road blocking and raising anti-state slogans.
Sanam Javed was produced before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday after completing a six-day physical remand. The police sought an extension of her remand, but Duty Judge Irfan Haider rejected the request, as well as her lawyer’s plea for her discharge from the case. The court has ordered her to be produced again on May 19.
Her legal counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq Advocate, strongly argued that Sanam Javed is being politically victimised, asserting that she is a peaceful political worker and the case is a clear instance of revenge. He further stated that all the other charges in the FIR are bailable, and that the terrorism charges were added nearly 80 days after the incident.
The FIR, filed at the Islampura police station, alleges that Sanam Javed, Alia Hamza, and other PTI workers had taken out a rally in front of the courthouse during which they blocked roads, resisted police, and shouted anti-state slogans. She was later arrested outside Kot Lakhpat Jail following a hearing related to the May 9 cases.
The investigating officer maintained that terrorism provisions were lawfully added based on the actions during the rally. However, the defense insists there is no evidence to support such serious allegations.
